What is the MRSWA? MRSWA was established to handle the waste disposal and recycling needs of four local agencies: Montgomery County, the Town of Blacksburg, the Town of Christiansburg, and Virginia Tech. MRSWA is an independent agency, as opposed to a government agency, but it exists to serve the needs of all four of these participating governments and Virginia Tech.
Among the things that MRSWA does for our region are to:
- Collect all solid waste (garbage, trash, land-fillables) from (1) the Town of Blacksburg, (2) the Town of Christiansburg, (3) Montgomery County, and (4) Virginia Tech, then transports this solid waste to a State-licenced landfill located on Cloyd’s Mountain Road near Dublin VA. This landfill is operated by the New River Resource Authority.
- Collect all recyclable materials from from (1) the Town of Blacksburg, (2) the Town of Christiansburg, (3) Montgomery County, and (4) Virginia Tech, then transfers these items to various appropriate regional recycling facilities. For more information on where these regional recycling facilities are located, please contact the folks at MRSWA.
