What is a sustainable community and why is this important for Blacksburg?
A sustainable community is one that takes into account many different human needs, not one need to the exclusion of others. And humans want and need many things from their community:
- Access to clean air and water
- Jobs and other economic opportunities
- A safe and healthy place to raise their kids
- Shelter
- Access to education
- A sense of belonging
- A say in the decisions that affect their lives.
So a sustainable community addresses these wants and needs, taking a long-term perspective. It is important that a community look at how it will need to change and adapt in the present and the future to persist over generations. That is why Blacksburg needs to be a sustainable community – so future generations can enjoy this wonderful town just as we enjoy it today!
This is not something overlooked by Blacksburg. You can see what our town is doing to change and adapt so present and future generations can thrive here by heading to Let’s Talk Blacksburg and the town’s Sustainability page.
