There are many ways we can divert food from the landfill and into the hands of those who need it most. Below are a few local organizations working on reducing food waste in our community.
The Campus Kitchen
The Campus Kitchen program is a partnership between VT Engage and Virginia Tech Dining Services. Campus Kitchen works to increase food access and to reduce food waste by redirecting unserved food from on-campus dining centers to hunger relief agencies in the New River Valley.
Share the Spare
Share the Spare is making their 2021 debut at the Blacksburg Farmer’s Market Saturday, June 5th! This program is within the NRV Master Gardeners and Cooperative Extension and their goal is to collect fresh local produce donated by the market shoppers to put on the tables of our friends and neighbors in need. Stop by their table at the Farmer’s Market to learn more information and to donate produce.
NRV Glean Team
The New River Valley Glean Team aims to join efforts to feed the hungry by growing food, gathering excess fresh food from farms, and purchasing bulk potatoes and giving it to food providers.
Future Economy Collective
Future Economy Collective collects donations of shelf-stable or refrigerated but long-lasting foods to distribute in their mutual aid boxes.
